Be pessimistic first
When someone asks how long something will take, how much it will cost, or what you can deliver – always start with the worst-case scenario.
Then, share the best case – and what needs to happen to make this possible.
Do this and they’ll compare your best-case scenario to the worst – and not to their unrealistic expectations.
Your answer will feel more reasonable. You’ll build trust. And you’ll take the pressure off yourself to deliver the impossible.
You can still be optimistic.
Just be pessimistic first.
