Instead, get them to expand on their question.
Say, “Go on” or “Tell me more”.
Paraphrase the question back to them, and let them respond.
Ask your own question so they talk more about what they want to know.
In meetings, we have a split-second to formulate our questions. Often what people ask and what they really want to know aren’t the same thing.
So resist the urge to respond to questions. Instead, get them to expand on what they really want to know.
Once they’ve done this, it’s time for you to respond.
