The ideal praise-to-criticism ratio is 5:1.
That’s how you build trust, motivate people and get results – with teammates, with bosses and with clients.
Noticing what people do well isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s essential. So make sure you:
👉 Praise effort and intent – not just results
👉 Be specific about what you’re recognising
👉 Give criticism too – but only after five bits of praise
Detailed praise makes people feel valued. It shows you’ve noticed their efforts.
Do it five times more than you criticise – and watch your relationship grow.
