Instead, say, “Tell me more”. And then stay quiet.
Let them speak until they’re done. Reflect back what you’ve heard so they feel understood.
Do this and you’ll find out what really matters. You’ll hear the full context. You’ll hear the real emotion.
You don’t need more questions.
Just let them explain things in their own words.
